Examiners
Examiners for the American Board of Ophthalmology are diplomates selected by the ABO to examine at the oral examination, item writers for the written examination and as special committee members in the development of examination materials.
Examiners are selected based on a strict ABO evaluation and their strong commitment to providing quality ophthalmic care.
The ABO is grateful to the many examiners who assist in the examination process, and who do so without compensation. The ABO is aware of the changing economics of private and academic medicine and recognizes the expense associated with time away from the office, as well as that for travel and lodging.
All ABO Directors and Examiners are informed by the ABO that they shall not promote, or permit others to promote, their participation in commercial or educational activities (domestic or foreign) under circumstances that exploit, or might be perceived to exploit, their familiarity with examinations administered by the ABO or otherwise might be perceived to compromise the integrity of those examinations. All computerized educational endeavors should be monitored so that this material does not compromise the ABO and the valued role of our Examiners. It is advisable that Examiners ascertain in writing an agreement stating that their educational material will not be published or marketed in any way that could jeopardize their relationship with the ABO. In addition, ABO Directors and Examiners may not exploit their association with the ABO through communications to the public or through self-promotional items. It is, however, acceptable to include a factual reference on curriculum vitae.
