Applying for
Written Qualifying Exam
- Ophthalmologists who complete ophthalmology residency prior to August 1 are eligible to make application to sit for the following year’s
Written Qualifying Exam (WQE).
- Candidates can apply for the WQE via the ABO web site from March through August 1 of each year to take the WQE offered the following spring. The Board will allow candidates to apply until September 1 by paying a late application fee.
- To apply for the WQE, candidates must log into the ABO web site using the
username and password supplied by the Board. In March of every year, usernames and passwords are mailed to all candidates eligible to apply for the follwing years WQE. (Ophthalmology residency programs will be sent the usernames and passwords for those finishing residency.)
- Approved applicants will receive scheduling information in January immediately preceding the examination. Candidates will schedule an examination appointment through ACT ’s online registration center or telephone registration system.
