Periodic Ophthalmic Review Tests (PORTs)
PORTs are a series of 50-item, online, self-review tests in core ophthalmic
knowledge (knowledge considered fundamental to the practice of ophthalmology) and 10 different areas of practice emphasis (listed
below).
Eligible diplomates have access to two PORTs, one core and one in a
practice emphasis area of choice, at no cost, via the Online Services Center.
PORTs were developed in an effort to create a series of mini-examinations that would meet the MOC goal of encouraging lifelong learning and self-assessment, while also providing diplomates with the opportunity to obtain valuable feedback prior to sitting for the DOCK examination.
PORT Topic Areas
The PORTs offered are the same topics as the modules offered in
the Demonstration of Ophthalmic Cognitive Knowledge (DOCK) exam and the content
of the PORTs reflect the content of the DOCK. Participation in PORTs
are designed to promote continuous learning and to help diplomates identify
strengths and weaknesses prior to sitting for the closed-book cognitive exam
(DOCK). Therefore, the Board encourages diplomates to select the practice
emphasis PORT in the same topic they plan to select for the DOCK.
There is no limit to the number of PORTs a diplomate may
participate in; however, upon the completion of two PORTs (one core and one
Practice Emphasis Area), a $100 fee is required for each additional PORT. Below is a
list of PORT and DOCK Practice Emphasis Areas:
- Cataract/Anterior Segment
- Comprehensive Ophthalmology
- Cornea/External Disease
- Glaucoma
- Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbit
- Oculoplastics and Orbit
- Pediatric Ophthalmology/Strabismus
- Refractive Management/Intervention
- Retina/Vitreous
- Uveitis*
*There are three versions for all PORT modules, except Uveitis, which has two versions.
Completing the PORT
The PORT is available online, on-demand to eligible diplomates. There is no fee for completion of two PORTs. Once a PORT is
started, users will have 30 days to complete it. A diplomate may complete only
one PORT at a time. During the 30-day timeframe, users can access and re-access
the PORT at any time. Diplomates will receive instant feedback on responses and
overall performance. The percentage correct need to successfully complete each PORT is 80%.

Online PORT Technical Assistance
The PORTs feature a tutorial and practice test to help familiarize users with the online testing environment, as well as a telephone number and email to request technical assistance.
For questions regarding the overall PORT program, selection of PORT modules, or the content of PORT modules, users should contact the ABO office.
