Enroll in Maintenance of Certification
ABO Maintenance of Certification (MOC) provides assurance to the public and to the medical profession that certified physicians continue educational activities, keep current in information and skills, and practice in a contemporary and safe manner. MOC components are designed to assess the knowledge, experience and skills requisite to the delivery of high standards of patient care in ophthalmology. The Board strongly encourages all diplomates, regardless of certification year, to engage in MOC — the process of lifelong learning and continuous improvement.
Even if you have never considered participating in MOC, there’s never been a better time to start. Rewards and recognition by insurers, health care organizations and government organizations are growing, along with public awareness about the value of MOC in patient care. Soon, the ABO will begin reporting diplomate participation in MOC to the public through its website. To have your name included among participants, take the first step and enroll today:
- If you were certified prior to 1992, your non time-limited certificate is not impacted by participation in MOC. Voluntary participation in MOC demonstrates to your patients a willingness to commit yourself to the highest standards of care.
.
- Former diplomates certified after 1992 whose certificates have lapsed are invited back to the ABO diplomate community through MOC. Completion of the process will reward former diplomates with a new certificate valid for 10 years.

Once we've matched your enrollment form to your diplomate record, you will receive login instructions and more information about the MOC process. Please allow 2-3 business days for processing.
MOC Components
You can obtain a recertification certificate by completing the components listed below.
- Part I - Professional Standing: A valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine is required throughout certification.
- Part II: Commitment to Lifelong Learning and Self Assessment: Submission of a total of 300 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits obtained in the past 10 years and successful completion of Two Periodic Ophthalmic Review Tests (PORT) are required. PORTs are 50-item online, on-demand open-book self-assessment tests that reflect the content of the closed-book cognitive exam (DOCK).
- Part III: Cognitive Expertise: The Demonstration of Ophthalmic Cognitive Knowledge (DOCK) examination is a secure, proctored 150-item computer-based examination given by one-day appointment in September of each year.
- Part IV - Practice Performance: One online, on-demand Office Record Review (ORR) is required. ORR is a self-review of 15 current patient records.
Non time-limited certificate holders and former diplomates who voluntarily enroll can complete the MOC components in any order, as they are offered.
MOC enrollment is valid for three years (until December 31 of the third year). For example, if an application is approved February 1, 2010, that application is valid until December 31, 2012.
