About Certification
Board Certification by The American Board of Ophthalmology Board intends to provide assurance to the public and the medical profession that a physician has successfully completed an evaluation designed to assess the knowledge, experience and skills requisite to the delivery of high standards of patient care in ophthalmology.
Continued Maintenance of Certification is meant to assure that members of the profession continue their education, keep current in information and skills, and practice in a contemporary manner.
The American Board of Ophthalmology awards the only medical specialty certificate in ophthalmology recognized by both the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
Formal Verification of Certification
The American Board of Ophthalmology is the primary resource for verifying that an ophthalmologist is certified. If your organization requires written verification of a physician’s certification, please submit your written request to the American Board of Ophthalmology Office. Your request must include the physician’s name and a check in the amount of $35 made payable to the American Board of Ophthalmology. The Board does not provide formal verification of a physician's certification by telephone.
If you do not require written verification, you can find out whether an ophthalmologist is certified by utilizing one of the methods listed here.
